The Bakgatla Grain Project, a youth-owned cooperative in Marapyane, Mpumalanga, aims to combat poverty and unemployment through agriculture. The project focuses on creating jobs for disadvantaged women and youth, leveraging government support for infrastructure, training, and market access. By promoting organic farming and community engagement, they aim to empower local residents and foster economic growth in their community.

The project was established in Marapyane, Mpumalanga, in 2022 to address poverty and unemploymen. Founded by six individuals passionate about agriculture, the project focuses on sustainable farming practices. Supported by the Mpumalanga Department of Agriculture, they aim to create jobs, promote healthy food production, and foster economic growth through agriculture in their community.

Partnerships with the Bakgatla Ba Mocha Traditional Council and government agencies are vital, providing the necessary land lease and ongoing support. The cooperative’s activities are driven by a commitment to improving local livelihoods through sustainable agriculture.

They have successfully cultivated maize, sunflower, and vegetables on 145 hectares of land. They have established a sustainable agricultural operation with support from the Mpumalanga Department of Agriculture, which has provided crucial infrastructure, training, and market access.
During the project the effectiveness of collaborative efforts between the cooperative, local authorities, and government agencies, was understood. This partnership has been essential in securing resources and fostering community engagement.
Areas of improvement could include expanding their market reach and diversifying agricultural activities to enhance income streams further.
