SUMMARY
The International Summer Week (ISW) is an annual event organized in Sardinia by the organisation TDM 2000, aimed at young adults aged 18-30, with a focus on cultural exchange, social entrepreneurship, and environmental sustainability. Its main goal is to foster international connections, promote Sardinian heritage, and engage participants in workshops, excursions, and social events. The event draws over 200 participants from all over the world, offering a mix of educational and leisure activities that highlight Sardinia’s cultural and natural beauty.
OBJECTIVES
The key objectives of ISW are to promote cross-cultural understanding and support youth empowerement. It also aims to create a network of proactive young people, stimulate creative thinking through workshops, and showcase the historical and cultural treasures of Sardinia.
CONTEXT AND BACKGROUND
The practice emerged in 2000, from the desire of a group of sardinian youngsters to encourage global youth participation and to promote the rich cultural, historical and enviornmental legacy of Sardinia. It was designed to create a space for young people to exchange ideas, build international friendships, to network and gain practical knowledge, which can be applied to both personal and professional development.
IMPLEMENTATION: ACTIVITIES AND METHODOLOGIES
ISW features a variety of activities such as workshops on various topics (each year there is a theme), excursions to cultural landmarks, beach parties, and themed social events. Participants also engage in brainstorming sessions, discussions, and group activities that foster collaboration. Innovative approaches include hands-on projects and visiting local realities and entreprises that exemplify good practices in social and environmental initiatives. The event is supported by various local and international partners, including the Regional Government of Sardinia and Municipality of Cagliari.
PROJECT OUTCOMES & LESSONS LEARNED
So far, ISW has successfully built a community of young leaders who are more knowledgeable. The event serves as a valuable networking platform for numerous youth organizations, fostering cooperation and collaboration. It has also inspired the creation of new organizations and informal groups of young people, promoting long-term partnerships and innovative initiatives among participants. A key lesson learned is the importance of balancing educational content with cultural immersion and social interaction, which enhances learning and engagement.
IMPACT
ISW brings economic benefits to the local Sardinian community through tourism and increased visibility of local businesses. It also promotes cultural exchange, allowing locals to connect with an international audience.
Young people, particularly the target audience, benefit from exposure to new ideas, practical skills and opportunities for networking. By involving participants in activities such as workshops and local visits, ISW empowers youth to contribute actively to community development and sustainability efforts. In recent years, the event has received support from the European Solidarity Corps, with the involvement of 20 local and international volunteers who contribute to various aspects of the event’s organization and execution.
Their assistance enhances the event’s impact by fostering collaboration and ensuring smooth operations across different activities.
